Ben 10 Paper Figures

IMG 6735

If you recall from Stephen’s Halloween costume, one of his favorite cartoons recently has been Ben 10. Usually, Marv and I wouldn’t hesitate to get him some Ben 10 toys (because we and our extended family are all certified toy nuts) but Ben 10 toys are actually not that easy to find.

Stephen isn’t bothered, though. He’s been creating his own Ben 10 paper figures. We “battle” with them, dance, hug, and even kiss (!). As much fun as it is to buy Stephen toys, it’s just as much fun to see him make his own. Thank goodness we haven’t totally spoiled him! Yet….

Halloween 2007 Recap

Halloween was a blast this year. Stephen’s classmate invited him and a few other children from his class over to their house for a party. As of last week, Stephen was still not prepared to go saying that Halloween was too scary. He was thinking back to last year when an older boy wore a really hideous mask that freaked the heck out of him. (The boy was really sweet and took it straight off when he saw how scared Stephen was but the damage had been done.)

Something flipped a switch in his head, though, and on Monday, he asked me to make him an Upgrade costume from Cartoon Network’s Ben 10.

ben upgrade

As far as I know, there’s no costume of this particular superhero nor would I spend money on one anyway. So I made some black felt gloves and embroidered them, used construction paper to make that Ben 10 chest badge and stitched it on to a DNA shirt (Ben 10 turns into each superhero when alien DNA fuses with his DNA), and gave him a ski hat to wear for head gear.

IMG 6651IMG 6650IMG 6649

We got a ride to the party from another classmate. When we got to their house, Stephen and the other boys wouldn’t stop telling each other, “Your costume isn’t scary. My costume is scary!” Guess scary is now cool and not just scary.

At the party, the kids ran wild upstairs, downstairs, outside in the garden. They played games, ate lots of chocolate, and screamed their heads off. The host mom had created a platter of “body parts” which she handed around, including a “severed finger” that was actually a raw pork sausage. Next thing we knew, one of the girls had taken a bite out of it and was eating it! YICK.

When we got the passle of kids out the door for trick or treating, it was easy to see how gangs are formed so easily. Mob mentality all the way. They ran down the sidewalk together, surged forward together, pounded the door together, shouted “TRICK OR TREAT” together, and lunged for the candy bowls together.

Of the ten houses that opened their doors, two belong in the Trick or Treating Hall of Shame.

One middle-aged woman opened the door looking very frightened.

“I’m sorry, I don’t have any children so I don’t have any sweets.”

OK. That’s fine. We’ll move on. But she clearly thought we’d do some tricking if she didn’t hand over something.

“Maybe you want some money?”

At this point, Stephen did me proud (or maybe not). His hand shot up and he said clearly and loudly,

“I want money!”

He and another boy ended up with a pound coin each while the others left empty handed.

So this is what I’m wondering about. If she didn’t have candy, why did she even bother opening the door? And if she forgot it was Halloween or wasn’t expecting trick or treaters, then just compliment the kids on their costumes, say sorry, and let it be the end. To hand out two pounds for splitting amongst 10 kids. Laaame.

The second house that belongs in the Trick or Treat Hall of Shame was one that actually had candy but didn’t want to give a pack to every child. The woman only gave out a few then said they must share when she clearly had more candy in the bowl. What the heck is that about? Several of the kids left crying. Cheap skate.

It’s a shame Stephen won’t ever experience the kind of Halloween I had as a kid when the sidewalks teemed with children, almost every house was giving out handfuls of treats, and pillowcases were heavy with junk. Last night, though, was plenty of fun to satisfy the boy. He even went to school this morning and thanked the party host and his dad for a great party. Chalk this Halloween up as a success on more than one front.

(We’re lucky we even got to trick or treat over here. Some UK curmudgeons want the nonsense to stop.)

Dear LEGO People

lego bionicleDear LEGO People,

My name is Stephen and I am five years old. I like Bionicle. My mum gave me Hahli and I played with him carefully. But I was sad when some of the parts cracked.

Can you please make all the Bionicles better? And, make Nuparu even stronger than Hahli? Please make the Bionicle legs and the other bits harder and please do not make them so soft.

Thank you, LEGO people.

Stephen

Update: Here’s their response just hours after we emailed them! Very impressive.

Dear Stephen,

Thanks for getting in touch with us!

I’m sorry there was something wrong with your Hahli Bionicle!

We try really hard to make sure all LEGO toys are perfect, but sometimes a faulty one sneaks through.

Actually - controlling the quality of the toys that leave our factory is a big job (about seven LEGO sets are sold every second!) and we spend a long time trying to get it right.

We have a whole department of experts (and machines) who test every LEGO set before it leaves us - they even weigh every box to make sure there’s nothing missing.

We’d like to get even better at catching any faulty LEGO sets though, so I’m passing your comments onto the team in charge of testing. It’ll help them make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Thank you for the suggestion of making Nuparu stronger than Hahli. We really appreciate you took the time to write to us! We would like to replace your broken pieces as well! Just let us know which ones got broken and we will send them to you for free!

Please get in touch if you have any more problems (you’ll need to remind me of the reference number on this letter).

School Lunch Tasting

IMG 6566

I’ve mentioned before that Stephen really seems to enjoy his school lunches. Earlier this week, I had a chance to attend a school lunch tasting. Now I can see how truly lucky he is to have such a wide selection of meals each day served by friendly staff. His school has its own kitchen with food prepared fresh on the premises and they also have a salad bar with fresh fruits and vegetables.

I especially appreciated the handout the food service team prepared.

Menus are nutritionally balanced using the latest computer-based technology and must conform to our own tested recipes and quality assurance programme. All of our suppliers are carefully identified and then audited to ensure that they are providing us with products that meet our quality and nutritional standards. We will not knowingly use any ingredient that has been genetically modified.

Our aim is to ensure that school meals are not only great value but that they also provide your child with a safe diet that will assist with their learning development

The school lunch tasting included:

  • Chick pea curry (my favorite!)
  • Chicken enchiladas
  • Quiche
  • Fish with white sauce (which didn’t look great but was very tasty)
  • Apple crumble with warm custard
  • Carrot cake

I know for a fact that Stephen is more willing to taste a variety of different foods because of the many flavors he encounters at lunch.

The lunches put my own simple meals to shame. And with smiling staff like this, lunches must be a highlight of the children’s day.

Thank you to everyone involved in encouraging Stephen’s culinary adventure!

Laptops Are To Flushing Toilets

Earlier this week on a very rainy morning, parents were allowed to bring the kids directly into the school rather than wait in line outside on the playground. It was a rare opportunity for me to have a peek inside Stephen’s classroom at the start of a busy day. To my amazement, the teacher was setting up laptops for them. It was the weekly Laptop Day and they were all very excited.

laptop caseOut of a huge aluminum shipping container (that looks something like the one pictured but much larger) came 15 or so laptops for the kids. Each silver laptop was placed in groups of three on the low tables. Stephen told me that they work on the computers with a partner and play some kind of teddy bear game. I was really pleased to see that the school was preparing the children for a high-tech future.

But would you believe that not everyone thinks children as young as kindergarten should have access to computers? One commenter said in a post at TechCrunch about a children’s website, Kindersay:

I don’t see why kids need a laptop for? Sorry if you are the kind of parents allows childen to play games all day.

*steam shoots out of my ears*

My favorite analogy in response to this type of attitude:

The computer is becoming as common and vital as the toilet. Parents who think they should or can keep their kids from it might as well have an outhouse. After all, a toilet and outhouse serve the same function and the latter may be more environmentally friendly!

Stephen has his own laptop at home on which he spends between 0 to 60 minutes each day totally supervised. What he sees online inspires him and yes, teaches him. I figure now that he’s got the toilet thing down pat, it’s time for him to conquer the computer!

FYI, here are some of Stephen’s favorite websites:

IMG 6534

Stephen’s been crazy about Hot Wheels Modifighters lately and has been drawing endless pictures of them (including others of Bionicles). He’s also been trying harder to sound out and spell words which sometimes leads to some very interesting results.

Take a closer look at the word I circled in red above. I asked if he had copied that from somewhere and he said no then proceeded to read it as C-X-Chunk or something. Whew! I was getting worried there for a second. I did only just finish Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides and don’t think Stephen would have read any part of that. Or has his reading advanced so rapidly that he’s sneaking peeks at my books?!

Shortcut

Last week, Stephen found a circular maze in the back of his bug magazine. Seeing how interested he was in it, I gave him Kumon’s My Book of Mazes: Things That Go! the next morning. He worked on it for several hours until he got about half way through the book. Later that evening, I had a look at his work and this is what I found.

Kumon workbooks are arranged by increasing levels of difficulty. In this particular maze workbook, the more fun vehicle-shaped mazes alternate with the graphical ones to build a child’s ability.

Me: Why didn’t you do this one properly?
Stephen: Because it’s boring!

Nice. Five years old and he already knows how to cut corners.

No Pictures Please

no hand

A Texas family has sued Australia’s Virgin Mobile phone company, claiming it caused their teenage daughter grief and humiliation by plastering her photo on billboards and website advertisements without consent.

…..
The picture of 16-year-old Chang flashing a peace sign was taken in April by Alison’s youth counsellor, who posted it that day on his Flickr page, according to Alison’s brother, Damon.

In the ad, Virgin Mobile printed one of its campaign slogans, “Dump your pen friend,” over Alison’s picture.

The ad also says “Free text virgin to virgin” at the bottom.

The camp counsellor had a Creative Commons license on his photos.

This is why I never post pictures of other people, especially ones of their children, online in any kind of public format. Even with their consent, there’s still the potential for misuses.

I think all my friends and family know this already but please don’t post pictures of Stephen online with his full face showing unless it’s in a private, locked album. Thanks.

Stephen’s School Lunch Menu

IMG 6489

This is for Noodlepie who’s asking to see everyone’s school lunch menu. Click to see a larger image.

Stephen quite likes his school lunches and tries new things every day. Yesterday’s new-to-him item was peach ice cream which he seemed to like yet wasn’t completely sold on.

Stephen: I had peach ice crem for dessert today.
Me: Oh! That’s interesting. Was it good?
Stephen nods: Yes! It was delicious.
Me: Should we get some next time?
Stephen: Naaah.
