Just Saying Hi

I’m having a fabulous time on vacation even though I caught another cold. That’s 4 for 4 this year. AHHHH. Doesn’t keep me from shopping. So far, two great pairs of shoes and a watch. Woohoo!

Protecting My Sansa From Scratches

Last month, Marv gave me my first MP3 player, a SanDisk Sansa e260. It works like a dream - transferring files is very easy, the control dial is easy to manipulate, and the functions are very intuitive. There’s just one problem.

It gets scratches from nowhere.

The first couple of weeks I had it, I didn’t even bother putting it in the little felt case. I carried it around in the back pocket of my small Kipling shoulder bag or my coat pocket without a second thought. Then one day, Marv wanted to borrow it and he noticed a few teeny tiny scratches on the right side of the screen that I could barely see unless I had it in the right light. A few days later, I got another half centimeter scratch in the lower righthand corner of the screen even though I was hyper-conscious of being careful. (Shhhh. Don’t tell Marv.) Time to get a screen protector.

Who knew these little MP3 devices get scratched so easily? I’ve read complaints about them all, particularly iPods. And did you know that there are a bajillion different ways to protect your MP3 player? There are hard cases, leather cases, silicone cases, plastic films…. After hours of research, I chose a Shieldzone full body invisibleSHIELD, selected the free shipping option, and 25 days later, I still haven’t received it I finally received it. They haven’t answered my emails and their site appears to be down today too (site is back up). I’m giving them another week before I open a dispute claim with PayPal.

Meanwhile, I’ve come up with a solution that seems to be protecting my Sansa fairly well and costs no more than a penny. Check it out.

Order From SkyMaul For Christmas

SkyMaul: Happy Crap You Can Buy from a Plane

Couldn’t find all the holiday gifts you needed this past Black Friday? Take a look through SkyMaul: Happy Crap You Can Buy from a Plane.

From Stanford Magazine:

The advertised products range from the slyly credible (a magnetic hybrid emblem to stick on your gas-guzzling SUV) to the overtly outrageous (a baby nightlight that displays images of Hitler and a werewolf).

Crazy, crazy stuff.

40% Off Threshers Coupon on All Wine and Champagne

In the UK? Like wine and champagne? Then this is for you.

Stores in the Thresher Group are offering 40% off all wine and champagne from November 30th until December 10th. Just present this coupon (pdf), have some means of transporting the crates ready, and party on! Don’t forget to get a few bottles of red wine for your heart.

It’s a somewhat secret compaign that is traveling by word of mouth so don’t expect to see fliers or any other advertisements about this offer. I know thanks to Hugh Macleod at gapingvoid whose latest cartoon, If You Were A Penis, is hilarious.

BTW, just in case anyone needs this link - A Dozen Steps.

Update: More UK online coupons.

Christmas Present for the Man in Your Life

Found this great reward chart for men while doing research for my latest post at Play Library about reward charts for kids. Wonder what Marv would say if I gave him this for Christmas.

Some of the credit categories: Remembers anniversaries and birthdays, pays you a compliment (without being asked), continues with life when he gets a cold, cooks the dinner (takeaways not included)!

Now if he doesn’t do very well then the partner benefits: He must take you out for a meal, you get a lie-in with breakfast in bed or he has to buy you flowers. If he does well then obviously he benefits: He gets the remote control for the evening, a night out with the lads or a night of hanky panky (with his partner of course!)

Available at The Victoria Chart Company for £6.99.

Dying to Buy

101 Things to Buy Before You DieIsn’t it ironic that just after I visited the Buy Nothing Day website, I see this book–101 Things to Buy Before You Die–featured in a Waterstone’s book catalog?

Synopsis

Maggie Davis and Charlotte Williamson, lifestyle journalists and enthusiastic shoppers, bring their insider know-how to this indispensable guide to shopping. Covering everything from cashmere to chandeliers, spice to scooters, teapots to tiles, and with a distinctly global flavour, this book is a collection of the ultimate in food, clothes, furniture and fun and is packed with tips from specialist buyers and those in-the-know. With side panels discussing topics as diverse as the things every gentleman should have in his bathroom closet, haggling and globetrotting gem shopping, this book is a must for discerning shoppers of all tastes and budgets.

About Buy Nothing Day:

Saturday November 25th 2006 is Buy Nothing Day (UK), It’s a day where you challenge yourself, your family and friends to switch off from shopping and tune into life. Anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!

This year our message is simple, shop less - live more! The challenge is to try simple living for a day, spend time with family and friends, rather than spend money on them.

Buy Nothing Day also exposes the environmental and ethical consequences of consumerism. The developed countries - only 20% of the world population are consuming over 80% of the earth’s natural resources, causing a disproportionate level of environmental damage and unfair distribution of wealth.

I’m not going to be a lemming and go without spending just to say I did but I would horrified if I had a list 101 things to buy before I die. What the heck kind of mentality is that?!

Winter Retail Therapy

Click for larger pics.

I got a new cardigan and in this season’s “in” color - grey. It’s stretch mohair from my favorite store, Kew. Looks like Stephen approves.

PS The passport application went without a hitch. I swear we were the only people in there who were totally prepared with all our documents and perfect passport photos. :P
