Playpen as a Special Treat

In a 1943 edition of the Spokane Daily Herald, Myrtle Meyer Eldred touted the benefits of playpens: "Not only is the child free of possible physical injury but his behavior is not subjected to constant punishment, since what he does in his guarded play-place does not annoy the parent."

I use the playpen so sparingly (mostly when I need to go to the bathroom or cook) that my kids think it’s a special treat to be allowed in one!

I got a great tip when I had baby #2. I put the older kids toys with little parts, legos, etc into the playpen and then let the older one go in to play with his ‘big kid’ toys. He got some space from his pesky ‘knocks everything down’ brother and the baby couldn’t get the tiny bits in his mouth. Also a plus, the older kid was old enough to see the benefits of playing in the playpen and didn’t try and fuss to get out like the baby did when I tried it the other way around!
Joan, You always have the oddest yet most ingenious suggestions. lol I often have to remind Stephen that he has his own room with a DOOR if he’s feeling annoyed about his sister bugging him.
