What are your hobbies?

When I was taking Japanese classes, one of the first conversational questions we learned to ask and respond to was: “What are your hobbies?”
For several years, my answer has included:
- Writing (blogging)
- Reading
- Needlework (cross stitch, crochet, sewing)
Now I’m wondering if I should scratch #3. According to Unclutterer, it may be time to say farewell to a hobby if I’ve spent less than 10 hours or less on it in the last 12 months. I have not sewn anything more complicated than a button since July 2007.
The thought of clearing any bit of my stash is depressing. I’ve got about three large packing boxes full of sewing supplies, books, and magazines sourced from all over the world. I’ve ordered old magazines from eBay and collected a marvelous load of goodies during the four-plus years we were in Japan. Most of my stash is irreplaceable and was already hard to find in the first place. It would be MADNESS to get rid of it, right?
I’m thinking that someday when the kids are old enough to leave my stuff alone, I’ll be able to set-up a stitching corner for myself. Right now, having needles and pretty colored thread laying about is too tempting and dangerous for little hands. And having only late nights to stitch isn’t great for my eyesight nor do I have the stamina for it anymore.
In any case, if the ultrasound was accurate and baby #2 is a girl, I’ve got plans to make a kimono-clad dolly for her from a kit I bought that was designed by a Japanese crafter. I hope it will turn out as half as cute as the dolls joybucket makes.

My hobbies are identical to yours! Internet, needlework, reading. I like swimming too, but I’m not sure if it counts as a hobby. I suppose obsessing about food and exercise could be counted as a hobby.
Rosie, Oooh. Swimming definitely counts as a hobby but it is so NOT my thing. And it’s not the whole bathing suit issue either. We were made to swim for a few months each year in high school and it was traumatizing because I wasn’t very good at it and drank more pool water than I care to remember….
I think this means I should sell off my stash of beads and wire. It’s not a kid-friendly hobby either!
Abigail, *sob* I know you feel my pain.
My hobby that I’ve not done anything with in a few years (other than increasing stash) is scrapbooking. And I’m not going to get rid of my stuff either.
It would be total madness to do so.
I’ve not done much needlework or sewing or crafting, either, but it brings me pleasure when I do have time.
Give yourself more than one year! Maybe five, or ten, because I don’t think those de-cluttering crazies take into account those of us who put things on hiatus when our kids are tiny.
And having to later re-purchase all the supplies we already have, when we finally have some time to put into our hobbies, makes no sense what-so-ever.
Especially when the economy is going into a recession, and finding good quality supplies is becoming harder. (one of my local fabric shops quit carrying DMC!!! Now they carry a cheap made-in-China “equivalent”. The strands are thinner, and they feel,… weird. Stiff? Thankfully there are still a couple other places that carry the DMC. I’d better go re-stock my 310)
Deb, How could a store NOT carry DMC? The cheap substitute floss is utter crap. Maybe good for friendship bracelets but not much else.
And no stitcher ever has enough 310! Scary that I still know instantly that it’s black.
Yeah, I think I’ll give myself another 10 years before giving away my stash. heh
I can understand the sentiment behind that thinking, but am refusing to let go of some of my hobbies.
Shai, You have more hobbies than anyone I know! But at the same time, I think you do keep up with most of them. w00t
