You Don’t Have to Like It

One of the moms at school was telling me about her daughter, then six, who was at a girl scout retreat. An older girl was gagging at one of the meals because she hated the food. My friend’s daughter said to her,
They’re not asking you to like it. You just have to eat it.
I love the sentiment of that because making it in life requires such a stalwart attitude. You don’t have to like something to do it and to do it well.
Take me and cooking, for example, I simply don’t enjoy the mess in the preparation and clean-up. If I can get a dish prepared for me that tastes the way I like, I’d rather buy it than make it myself. That doesn’t mean I don’t know how to cook that dish, or that I don’t cook for my family, or even that I don’t know how to cook at all. It just means that cooking is not high on my list of priorities. I have better things to do with my time (like blogging for example
). I still cook at least five or six days out of the week but I do not like it. I don’t like cooking but I have to do it and I do it well.
Other things I don’t like but do just fine:
-
Shower (heh)
-
Keep track of money
-
Discipline children
-
Socialize
-
Take tests
Similarly, just because I can do something well doesn’t mean I like it. Such is the imbalance and unfairness and general suckitude of life.

In the same vein … if can do something, you don’t necessarily have to do it.
mdmhvonpa, Hell yeah.
I absolutely loathe brushing my teeth. And I don’t do it very often or very well. Ow.
However, I’m surprised you don’t like taking tests, I relish the opportunity to shine and I imagined that you were similar! haha.
Rosie, Have you not realized yet that I’m damn lazy? Tests require lots of prep, etc. and success isn’t always guaranteed.
That is so funny, I just used that line on my eldest today when he was fussing about having to do the math and computations for his science fair project! “It doesn’t have to be fun, it just has to be finished!”
Joan, I say the same to Stephen when he says his homework is “booooring.” Tooo bad!
I’m with you on the shower thing. More specifically, I hate hate hate washing my hair but I do it once a week whether it needs it or not. Heh.
Sheila, I thought you went in to have your hair washed and set? You’re so Asian that way. heh
Very interesting post.
Things I DON’T like, and DON’T do well (sometimes I just don’t even do at all):
1. ALL housekeeping-related activities (eg bed-making, clothes-folding, vacuuming. picking up after kids etc);
2. Making small talk with other school mummies;
3. Exercising & eating healthily.
Things I DON’T like, but do anyway:
1. General hygiene (wash hair, shower, brush teeth, floss sometimes, skincare);
2. Baking;
3. Drinking water.
4. Applying makeup.
I’ll need to get me some of that ’stalwart attitude’ if I’m to drum this into my kids!
Lilian, You fail to realize that what you do with me almost every day is small talk! In any case, it’s easier to tell the kids what to do than to do it ourselves. hehee
