Sidewalk Barbecues in Vietnam

Johns Hopkins University President William Brody spent two weeks in Beijing studying Mandarin in 2006. Here he describes the dining experience:
One of our favorites is a Muslim restaurant, where we get dinner for two for $2 or $3, including a chicken kabob, curried eggplant, rice, and beer. The food is quite tasty, though perhaps not as hygienic as at home — I really liked the barbequed chicken or lamb on a bamboo skewer until Wendy observed that they probably reuse the skewers.
When I read this, I guffawed because it reminded me of the sidewalk barbecues in Vietnam. Marv and I are big fans of the ol’ BBQ and I occasionally asked our helper to buy us a sampling to eat at home with rice vermicelli salad. We often saw that the vendors laid their grills directly on the sidewalks along busy streets but the grilled meat was so delicious that we tried not to see if you know what I mean.
Here’s a photo I’ve nicked from Noodlepie where Graham goes into great detail describing “barbecue boulevard.”
Direct proof that barbecue causes cancer.

i loved those bbq skewers. it’s called chuan’r in chinese. i loved eating it till people told me the “lamb meat” could easily be rat meat or some other diseased meat.
When in China, beware!!!
Satay, and smoked pork ribs, and teriyaki salmon and oh there are just so many yummy things cooked on grills.
If I have a choice between some slight potential cancer risk, or not eating scrumptious food, I’ll go with the risk.
After all, what’s the point in living life, if you’re not enjoying it?
Deb, You sound like my mom! But I agree, I’ll take a second helping please!
a lot of people get diarrhea from dirty street food.
oops, sorry, my last comment may be unrelated to your topic, but uh, i just wanted to tell the above poster that in china…it’s not just “bbq”…it can be quite dirty and unhygienic, and good as the “bbq skewers” may be, they can cause diarrhea…and that’s not good!
laurina, Diarrhea is definitely NOT good. Sad to say, I’ve gotten food poisoning almost every place I’ve been even in places that are generally clean. But it might be that Chinese saying about going to a new place and not being used to the water, etc. Can’t seem to find it on Google to paste it here!
