Homemade Tonkatsu Dinner
Posted by Cottontimer on 22 Jul 2007 | Tagged as: Food
Despite a busy weekend reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I made this dinner last night - tonkatsu (using Lilian’s recipe) with aka miso sauce, tender stem broccoli, and steamed short-grain rice. See! I can cook. The question is: will I?

If you enjoy it, then of course! But when it becomes a dreaded chore, it’s time to let someone else do the work
Cooking is definitely more chore than pleasure for me.
I would love to try the tonkatsu recipe! It looks easy enough and that’s something that I would definitely eat!
It was so easy and tasty that I don’t think I miss restaurant tonkatsu anymore!
i’m beginning to enjoy cooking
but i think i am now because i have the time to try otherwise, if i were working or having to take care of a child, i don’t think i’d enjoy it as much.
i’ve got my copy of HP & the DH all the way from Shanghai but i haven’t started yet!
Deathly Hallows was a great read and I feel so sentimental about the whole series now.
Wow, this looks really good! I’m very impressed — I would invite myself to your place for this yummy meal if I were still in London!
You’re my inspiration. la la la la
Do I see broccoli-rabi?
Nope. Not rabe. This is much sweeter. According to Wikipedia, tender stem broccoli is also known as broccolini, Asparation, Asparations, and Baby Broccoli.
Yum, looks healthy and delicious! Haven’t cooked much lately myself - feels like cooking competes directly with other things that require my attention - like a 6 month old!!! How do you find the time?
So what are you guys eating nowadays? We were lucky to be living in Japan back when Stephen was an infant and toddler. Lots of yummy prepared foods.
A lot of pseudo-prepared foods ala Trader Joe’s - you know, like dumplings, gyozas, frozen veggies - also lots of fresh fruit and veggies when we can, but only occasionally do we cook something new totally from scratch! Having more pizzas than we normally eat too…
I am fond of making “Junk in a Pan”.
Basically, you cut whatever meat you want to use into bite size pieces, and brown them in a large non-stick skillet with lots of seasoning (maybe curry blend, or cajun seasoning, or whatever sounds tasty). Then add uncooked rice or lentils or noodles. Then add fresh or canned veggies. Then dump in some canned chicken broth, or coconut milk, and add water until it looks like enough to cook the rice/lentils/noodles.
Put lid on. Bring to boil, then reduce to a simmer. Remember to check once in a while, and just before serving give it a good stir.
Never the same twice, but usually good. At least, that is what the guys say.
I’m fond of using meat + rice + veggies + lots of red curry paste + peanut sauce + coconut milk. Veggies being things like bamboo or water chestnuts or sweet peppers, etc.
But your dinner looks really good, and maybe I would actually cook that sometime. I’m a lazy cook, and my favorite recipe is the courier company that delivers food from various restaurants that normally only offer pick-up.
Interesting recipe! I will have to try that since the ingredients sound like the kind of stuff we like to eat.
Oh wow, that looks delicious! Much more so than the Trader Joe’s soup I’m having for dinner…
Jonathan! Fancy seeing you here. I wouldn’t mind having some Trader Joe’s goodies here actually.
Ummm look nice!
Thanks, Stephanie! Although I’m sure it doesn’t compare to all those Japanese restaurants you’ve been frequenting.
That looks just delicious. Can you make me some?
Anytime, Kate!
