I've gotten "ripped off" there before too. There's a discount bookstore near me that I love. I picked up a PJ O'Rourke book there for just 99p the other day and I buy Stephen's workbooks there too. I think some of the books are remainders and others have slight defects. For example, I've noticed some minor printing errors in Stephen's workbooks but at 67% discount, I think we can deal! B&N is super expensive if you’re not a member. I’ve gotten “ripped off” there before too.

With my membership discount, it's the same or cheaper than going through Amazon. But unless it's a very shiny new release, like Harry Potter, I check my favorite used shop first. I'm guaranteed it will be 50% off cover price at the least. And if it's an older edition, printed back in the 70s or the 50s, cover price can be very small indeed. I've gotten tasty mysteries for less than 50 cents. :D It's just a good thing I don't live in Portland, because most of my spare money would end up at Powell's. I try to buy from my local B&N.
