Hi Dodi, Thank for the comment! School photos are a rite of passage that I hope won't ever fade away. How else can we look back on our schooldays with both embarrassment and fondness? ;)

I always buy a copy of the school photos. I work on photo editing for a few local photographers, and I know they appreciate it when people buy the photos. I also, however, think that school and event photographers should offer digital options - even if they choose to have a larger price on them than a 5x7 might cost. Most people don't want to steal, they want to be honest and will pay for the chance.

I'm leaning towards being more offensive in general. Beats having to be DEfensive. First strike advantage!

I take my child's school portrait. :) I suppose maybe there's an official option for home schoolers, or maybe that's a business idea for me. Hmmm...I could BE the next annoying photographer who takes bad pictures of kids!!! :D :D :D But, if we weren't homeschooling, I'm 100% sure I would buy the pictures they took. Just because I'm usually too afraid of offending someone. I really need to get over that!

So I guess we all think alike. Support them even if they do a crappy job. How will these "professional" photographers ever learn their lesson? bah

I've dealt with 2 sets of photos for the past 2 years - the public school ones (crappy - and he missed the spring one entirely) and the ones taken at his daycare (great even with 2 different photography companies). So I've happily bought the daycare ones and bought the minimum for the public ones.

My daughter wears glasses and her school portrait this year was a picture of her with her glasses fallen halfway down her nose, with the result that the frame totally obscured her eyes! I was so annoyed that the photographer hadn't thought to tell her to push them up - I suppose at 11 years of age she should have had the sense to do it herself, but still. I bought the photos anyway - sucker!

My relatives always want them---the wallet photos etc. Of course we buy the class photo---usually it is a real feat to get Charlie to look, much less smile, at the camera (smiling is not something he does when requested). But, three years ago, he took a beauty (with his top 2 front teeth missing) and I spent too much in reprints, including those 8 x 11 glossies. Had to savor the moment!

Candids with my cell phone are my favorite.
