Of Under-Eye Circles and Grey Hair
Posted by Cottontimer on 10 May 2007 | Tagged as: Me
Once upon a time, I thought dark under-eye circles were a badge of honor – a sign of hard work, dedication, diligence, and duty above self. Now I think they’re a sign of fatigue, physical exhaustion, sleep deprivation, and insanity.
I wanted under-eye circles so badly when I was younger, but was graced with them only a few times. Now that I don’t desire them AT ALL, they stealthily snuck up on me.

And to top it all off, when I was getting my haircut yesterday, the hairdresser lifted up the back of my hair and said, “Look at all that grey!”
I knew I was getting more grey hair by the day, but I had no idea I had enough to elicit such a reaction. I’m lucky that I’m turning grey in the underpart first but it’s just a matter of months before they start showing more prominently and I’ll have a hard decision to make – to dye or not to dye?
What signs of aging have you noticed and what do you plan to do about it?

What? I thought you advocated plucking them all. ‘Fraid you’ll go bald?
Meet my friend Hair Color. He is very nice.
It’s getting to the point where it would be a significant investment of time to pluck them out. And, yes, eventually I WILL be bald if I go that route. *SOB*
So this HC guy you know, has he got a name? hahhaaa
I started going gray when I was 17! Having had an aunt that had un-naturally jet black hair well into her 60s, I promised myself I would never color it, I would go gray gracefully. About 7 years ago I changed my mind (I was sick and feeling awful and looking worse) and had it colored. Now I do it myself. I know it looks better, when I do let it grow out too much it’s clear that in those 7 years I have really crossed the line from ‘a few gray stragglers’ to ’salt and pepper.’ My worry now is when and how to stop! I don’t want to be 60 with ‘right-out-of-the-box-auburn’ hair but I also can’t imagine how silly I will look while it grows out in a wide gray tide!
I’m right there with you Joan – I was 18 when I spotted my first, and now I am 38 and have totally white streaks at each temple – a la Bride of Frankenstein. Hair Color has been my friend for a very long time now.
My mom had a gray stripe starting at her crown and going diagonally across the top of her head to her bangs. Her hairdresser said after she’d leave his shop, people would ask him how he did that, and could he do it for them too! He was alittle bummed he couldn’t recreate it!
I believe that when we are 60, the “in” look will be baldness. No worries then!
What do I notice? Grey hair and wrinkles? What am I doing about it? Nothing and mosturizing.
Sounds about the same as me. /me raises fist in solidarity
I have gray hair coming in too but what really hit home is the amount of times I pull my back out just getting out of bed in the morning. Ugh!
I hobble downstairs to the coffee maker. The horror!
HORROR! AHHHHHHHHH!
I can’t imagine ever having wanted these under-eye circles!
A friend found my first white hair when I was 16. She was sitting behind me. I was not happy.
I’ve been coloring for a while now. I’ll stop someday, I think.
Kerri, I think the main reason I wouldn’t want to color is because it seems like such a dang hassle! If I were the more adventurous sort, I’d get into it and experiment. What’s the weirdest color hair you ever got?
OK let’s see…there’s grey hair, dry skin, fine lines around the eye, visible lines around the neck, wounds not healing as fast esp made more visible when it is on the face & a whole lot more I guess. The only thing I do is be diligent with skin care.
Hi Farah!! I forgot about the scars. Even the ones from pimples last forever. Argh.
Thank goodness for make-up!
[...] I get so irritated seeing. I am glad at least that I have come to terms with my grayness (unlike Hsien – heh). I need a hair color job, desperately, but at least I got my nails and toes done last [...]
Grey hair/receding hairline = crew cut of no longer than 5 microns.
It’s that damned bush of hair growing out of my ears that’s the worrisome part. Where are all these new hair follicles coming from! I’ve started to grow hair on parts of my body that I never though would need landscaping.
Never fear! I am sure there are people with ear hair fetishes. Hopefully one of them is the missus. hahaa
I call them “silver highlights” and after all these years of trying to get the right shade of blonde highlights into my dark brown hair I have decided to embrace my silver highlights and not color anymore.
You look great!

Those are some great pictures of you, Char! I think your Design Her Gal alterego pales in comparison to the real you. I much prefer seeing pictures of you than a cartoon!
The thing about being Asian, some of my European friends say, is taht they cannot really our age. They said we look younger. So, I guess, you can get away with dying your hair. But then again, you’ll miss those “you look too young to have grey hair” comments hehe
Hmmm. I’m not sure if I’m blessed with the “looking younger because I’m Asian” thing. Waaah.
My memory is not what it was….. Any gray I get, am glad to show off.
That is some good attitude. I must get me some. Tell me where?!?
I only have a few grey hairs, and luckily for me, they look almost blond – and so i consider them “highlights”!!!!
However, losing hair is a bit more of a problem for me, I am getting quite a collection of adorable hats….
As for the undereye circles…join the club. I used to think that the dark circles made me look smart…or that I had a bit more of a glamorous life than I actually did.
Now, I think that they are here to stay. I cant even cover them up anymore…its too much of an effort. Unless you are knowing of a super concealer????
By the way, I think you should dye your hair navy blue. Really close to your natural colour…but just different enough to make people take a second glance and think about what you did differently.
Erm. Thank you for the old lady blue hair suggestion. /me stomps off
I have had circles under my eyes for as long as I can remember. I used to think older ladies who caked on makeup to cover the circles just looked silly. It was all cakey! But then my circles got really bad and I did an experiment, caking makeup under one eye and leaving the other alone.
I was horrified to see the makeup effect actually looked better than a big ole bruised-looking circle.
*sigh*
Got any before and after shots to share?
what are you thinking?
i would never suggest old lady blue hair (ick!). i am suggesting navy blue (its semi punk).
old lady blue hair, so very very wrong, for so many reasons. you would think women of a certain age (much older than 35)would know that they can’t get away with colouring their hair with a hue that can be found in a crayon box.
navy blue – not for old ladies!
I never know someone in my life that think “dark circles” are cool. You are the first one.

Fun idea for a blog, iry! Thanks for the comment. So do I get a medal for being the first weirdo to appreciate under-eye circles?
[...] Come to think of it, gray hair don’t lie. [...]
