Essential Tools and Household Appliances
Posted by Cottontimer on 29 Mar 2007 | Tagged as: Me
Yesterday, Char shared my list of essential computer software tools at Essential Keystrokes which reminded me of this list of what Americans claim they need.
-
Car - We’re currently a 1-car family and Marv gets the car for work, so I go everywhere on foot, bus, or subway. I kind of enjoy it this way!
-
Clothes washer and dryer - Not having to go to a laundromat is fabulous, isn’t it? And soft, fluffy towels are one of life’s luxuries for sure.
-
Home air conditioning - Supposedly getting a portable one this week.
-
Microwave - How else can I warm up my M&S ready-made meals? (So shameful.)
-
TV - Sadly, we now have one in the living room AND bedroom.
-
Car air conditioning - I still remember when my dad forbade us from using the air conditioner in the car because it would overwork the engine.
-
Home computer - We’ve got one for each member of the family. What about you? I’ve got a poll running on Play Library right now.
-
Cell phone - Got one and barely use it. Maybe about ?1 worth of usage a month.
-
Dishwasher - I love having one here in London. Saves me a lot more time than I expected.
-
Cable or satellite TV - How else would I watch American Idol?!
-
High-speed internet - Goes without saying although Gayla only just recently got high-speed after years of working online on dial-up.
-
Flat screen TV - Should this really be a separate category than the TV above? Something wrong with this poll.
-
iPod (and I assume MP3 players in general) - Score!
I’ve written before about all the modern conveniences I didn’t have. Since December 2005, I’ve acquired wristwatches, an MP3 player, cordless phones, laser printer (my old one resurrected), and a vacuum. Life is gooood.
What essential tools and appliances can’t you live without?

Hsien - I love this list. We are so spoiled here. We have more than what we need.
I have to have my own vehicle - we live too far from civilization for me to function without it.
A dishwasher and clothes washer/dryer are essential for me too.
Gotta have my cell phone and my high speed internet.
We have all the other stuff, too, I just don’t think it is essential for me (the rest of my family would say different).
You can watch American Idol on ITV, no need for cable or satellite!
I don’t have air-conditioning anywhere, but it never gets hot here, so that’s ok
Char: I think we’re spoiled too but at the same time, having all these necessities puts more pressure on us as well. I bet clothes weren’t watched after one-wear before!
Am?lie: Oh, you’re right about AI! But I am grateful to have Sky plus so I can record the show and skip all the commercials with ease.
I’m not sure if we need the A/C or not because I wasn’t here last summer but the breeze we get from the river is quite adequate. The company’s providing the A/C for all the overseas staff so we’ll take it! Will be nice at bedtime because it sure does get hot at the very top floor of the house.
In London you’ll definitely enjoy having A/C (although whether it’s a necessity or a luxury is still debatable, but it’s ok having a few luxuries
). Here in Manchester I don’t think it’s needed it at all, but some people start complaining of the “heat” when it’s 22C and I just think it’s barely getting warm.
I cannot live without a blow dryer. I absolutely hate blow drying my hair, but it is naturally wavy and turns out a giant poofy mess if I let it air dry. Now I know why all those women in the 50’s said, “I can’t go anywhere, I just washed my hair.”
No wait, I think it was, “I just washed my hair and I can’t do a THING with it.”
Yeah, that’s it.
A humidifier. Since we moved to a place with electric heat I can’t sleep without it. It makes me feel horrible all the next day.
Washer and dryer are great. This is our first time having our own.
Cell phone. We have no landline.
Microwave. I would barely eat without one.
Laptop. Not just a computer, a laptop. And Mac at that.
TV. And I get to write it off too - thanks to my job.
We have a dishwasher in our home . . . me. LOL!
i think it\’s such a shame that the united states has such a poor public transportation system, well at least for california. bart is ok, but buses are terrible!
ahaha, my dad was the same way with the car air conditioner. He said it used up more gas so eveeerrrryyyyonce in a while he would announce “roll up the windows, I am going to use the air conditioner” and we would have about 10 minutes of bliss. Because we didn’t have an air conditioner at home either so it was a real treat
Sheila: Oh, yes. Hair dryer is very important. I have the opposite problem. My hair would be flatter than my unironed sheets if I didn’t blog dry it. I’m almost amazed that my sis can let hers air dry and it’ll still look fine.
OMG. I just typed BLOG dry it. nuts
Arieanna: Perhaps I should get rid of my microwave. It would be a great diet plan!
kailani: You laugh now but you’ll never go back if you try a dishwasher. Serious!!
laurina: Hey, girl! BART is great but it still comes so much less frequently than subways in Asia. In my parents neighborhood, the only bus stop is a mile away.
Donna: lolol The mall is a great place to hang out for a/c too. The most important times to have a/c is when sleeping and when ironing.
Love the list
we don’t have a flat screen tv; nor do I have a cell phone (I had one ages back, but I don’t like using them. meh.)
we’re getting a/c for the house *does a major happy dance* (it regularly hits the 90s in the summers here).
hmm, oh, I don’t have an iPod either. Nor do I want one. I don’t like having things in my ears for a long time. Besides, we have a separate hard drive on our network just for mp3s, and so I can listen to music anywhere in the house or yard I want (yay for laptop with wireless)
Compared to other people, especially other countries, I have to admit I live a comfy life and am spoiled. Compared to other Americans, we’re really not all that spoiled at all. While we have two vehicles, both are used and both are over ten years old. Most of our furniture has been given to us by relatives, or bought on the cheap at estate auctions. etc.
I like my luxuries though, and am in no way inclined to give them up until I have to. Even though a part of me feels guilty about the environmental issues going on in the world, heh.
gotta go eat pizza now, American Idol in 30 minutes. (we are so addicted to that show it’s not funny)
Deb: I am sooo into American Idol too!!! Marv’s given up on the season already. Says they’re all boring. Now promise you’re not going to post any spoilers or I’ll have to shield my eyes when I visit your blog.
LOL, that depends on the timeline between when it airs here (show on Tuesday 7pm, results on Wednesday 8pm, MST) and when it airs for you.
I can probably refrain from most postings on the topic, unless the fangrrls vote in Senjaya as the American Idol- in which case I think I may have to rant right away..
Deb: AHHH. That boy is getting more annoying by the week. Not his fault but sheesh!!! It airs on Friday nights here since they have to do stuff like blur out the Coke logo and add segments by this UK presenter who does mini-interviews and crap. We usually watch on Saturday so we can fast forward through the ads. I try so hard not to see anything all week and have done pretty well so far but I know at some point, I’ll find out something I didn’t want to know. ARGH.
Fifteen:
car (I live in an ‘underpopulated’ state in the western u.s., walking to work would take about a day each day, and then I would have to sleep in a tree instead of going home at night), computer, refrigerator with freezer, telephone, cell phone, camera (preferable digital), radio, t.v., cooking appliance (sometimes an entire stove, sometimes just a couple portable burners - does this count as TWO?), hair dryer, washer and dryer (clothes), sewing machine, and coffee maker.
