Safe Foods to Eat at a Lunch Meeting
Posted by Cottontimer on 02 Mar 2007 | Tagged as: Food
Generally speaking, I don’t have a weird relationship with food. I eat pretty much whatever I want within reason. I’m not allergic to anything and I don’t deny myself anything I really want to enjoy. The only problem I have with food is…I don’t like to eat in front of people I don’t know very well.
When I was in college, I never ever went down to the food hall on my own. And if I didn’t have anyone to eat with, I would sometimes go down to get some food to bring back up to my room or I would simply skip the meal. Even now, I don’t like dining alone in public. Having a coffee and something to eat in the morning at Starbucks all by myself is more than enough adventure for me. And I never just sit there and eat, I always have a magazine or the paper to read.
So, I have a confession.
*BIG BREATH*
I don’t like breakfast meetings. I don’t like lunch meetings. I don’t like dinner meetings.
I never eat the food served at seminars. I never go to something just because of the free food.
I’m way too self-conscious to eat properly and always manage to spill something, choke, or get food stuck between my teeth. Food is too messy and involved for me to be able to talk and act intelligently at the same time.
But, I can’t avoid it. So I’m making a list of safe foods to eat at meetings with people I don’t know very well and who I’m trying to impress.
- Soup
- Quiche
- Pasta (but not spaghetti because it’s too hard to control)
- Risotto
- Fish (no beef or chicken because it gets stuck between your teeth)
- Cake
Got any other safe food suggestions for me?

Going out for a meal with just a book for company is one of my favorite indulgences!!! The thought of eating soup in front of people is frightening to me, though. Always afraid of dribbling down my chin.
How ’bout little quesadillas or something? Or maybe just cake meetings from now on.
So I am guessing you would not have enjoyed the crab feed I just attended, where bibs are mandatory and you break the crab apart with your hands, sending juice and bits of crab all over everyone around you. I got home and found a tiny little piece in my hair that no one bothered to tell me was there. Niiice.
Kerri: Cake meetings would be a dream.
Sheila: Ohhh. I don’t like to eat crab much at all because it’s such a pain!! But I will make an exception for close friends and family.
It’s definitely best when it’s an hor’dourves buffet. So anything that is already bite-sized is generally in the “safe meeting food” category.
And to combat the “food stuck in teeth” problem, chew with the back teeth, and carry handy-dandy floss pics in your purse. this page is an example of what I’m talking about. Just excuse yourself to freshen up, and in the relative privacy of the ladies’ room you can remove all sorts of food bits.
My issue isn’t about whether the food is messy; it’s about scanning the menu and deciding what I want to eat in a reasonable amount of time. I can spend *forever* agonizing over which option I’d like to eat. Indecisiveness is probably not the trait I want to demonstrate at a business meeting, LOL.
