Let’s Walk in London

Walking is the way to go in London. Not that I have any choice. I haven’t got a car here! Marv takes the car to work every weekday leaving me to walk or take public transportation. No complaints, though. It’s the only exercise I get and I appreciate the motivation.
When we first moved to London, I relied on the bus more because I had absolutely no idea how long it would take to walk places and didn’t know which walking routes were the most efficient. Luckily, one of the moms at school showed me the way and not only is walking faster, it’s less subject to traffic and other weird delays.
For example, one time we were on a bus headed for our local high road when we got stuck simply because the road was too narrow to allow our bus and the bus coming from the opposite direction to pass at the same time. But in order for one of them to back-up, they needed someone to get out and guide them. No one seemed up to the task until another bus showed up at least 10-15 minutes later and that driver got down to guide the buses through. Insane, right?
For people who are in Central London, this walking map created by students at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design could save you time and make you healthier.
It is amazing how many stops take less than ten minutes to walk between!
So many journeys are actually far quicker on foot.
When you walk there is no chance of:
being charged
being delayed
having to wait once on the platform
being squashed on the platform or once in the train
Amen! I’ll walk to that.

Thanks for that map! I’ve saved it *and* printed it. I’m a big believer in walking. Cycling too. I walked from Fulham Broadway to Kensington High Street this weekend, almost by accident. (I remembered the hellish bus ride that I had - from North End Road to Hammersmith and back to North End Road — to avoid a couple of blocks of roadworks.) Seemed like it took ages, it must be over a mile, but it was probably no longer than the ride back in the bus.
I’m tickled about your ‘backing up bus’ conundrum. Such absurd mindset about entitlement … it’s too much!
See, this is what I miss about the cities I’ve lived in before moving to this little college town. Walking around!! I don’t like having to drive everywhere.
Hi Hsien,
Yes…indeed this article that you wrote reminded me about my days in London, all in all almost 9 years, since 1972. Brought back fabulous memories. Being a few years since my last visit. Time to walk the streets of London once again, before my legs fail me!!
Love you blog. Lots of different things. A great concoction.
And Happy Valentine’s Day to you.

Jill: After our last lunch, I decided to walk back to pick up Stephen. I thought my Sketchers were plenty comfortable but by the time I got there, I had a HUGE blister that was bleeding profusely. Had to ask the teacher for cotton puffs and a bandaid. It still hasn’t healed. WAAAHH.
mdmhvonpa: Hey, isn’t that MY sandwich you’re eating?
Cocoen: Can you believe I turned down a ride today so I could walk? I have lost my mind.
Franco: Thank you for the nice comment! I bet London is tons different now. For better or for worse? Not sure. Come back and take a walk!
[...] Car - We’re currently a 1-car family and Marv gets the car for work, so I go everywhere on foot, bus, or subway. I kind of enjoy it this way! [...]
