Golden Pig Year

One child family. That’s us and I’ve gotten used to it. We enjoy our life the way it is. Bringing another baby into the mix would be a huge upheaval since we’re past nighttime feedings and waking (for the most part), diapers, and other special baby needs. But if anything would get me to change my mind maybe the Year of the Golden Pig could do it.
Dr. Lo Siento over at Rice Daddies says that Golden Pig Year only comes around every 600 years and any child born during this year will be wealthy and successful. According to The Seoul Times,
A person born this year is likely to be a good parent. He may be easy to anger, but he is intelligent, honest, courageous, completes projects, gallant, and sincere. People born in these years are honest and straightforward. They can be relied on to see things through. They tend to be popular and make lasting friendship and are good neighbors.
So how can parents go wrong? Well…it could all be just stuff and nonsense. Historians cannot find any record of this Golden Pig superstition. Some think that it’s malarky made-up to boost declining birthrates in industrialized Asian countries like South Korea and Singapore.
This reminds me of the craziness surrounding the start of the 21st century. So many people were eager to have children in the year 2000, which was also the Chinese Year of the Dragon, that there were concerns of overcrowded hospitals especially on New Year’s Eve. Then there’s the issue of getting these “millennium babies” into school because there are just too many of them. Later on, they may even have problems finding a job.
Well, I’ve sobered up now. That momentary flash of broodiness has dissipated and I’m back to enjoying my single-child parenting existence. At least Shai and some other friends I know who are giving birth in March will be able to enjoy their golden pigs.

hah ha.. i hear this at office at least every other day now. As one of our colleague’s hubby wants a baby and she is not that keen. But she wants a successful kid and he has been brainwashing her with this whole Golden Pig business! It also turns out that a child born in the year of Golden Pig would be a great match for the parents’ year (or however you explain that)!
Oh the amusement we get at her cost.
Never heard of the Golden Pig Year superstition until today. These things are quite funny. I mean, how can it be that a few thousand people born on the same year all be successful and wealthy?
Anyway, it’s a fun thought. Hehe.
Hmmm… so does that mean there will never be Child #2?
Smitha: That poor future kid of theirs. Already so many expectations!
Shai: Hi there! You’re on the right track for sure. As for #2…we’ll let fate decide although every time I see a friend’s new baby, I get teary eyed. Ahhhh.
[...] Did you know next month is Chinese New Year and that this coming Lunar New Year is the Year of the Golden Pig that supposedly only comes around every 600 years? Any child born in the Year of the Golden Pig is guaranteed wealth and success. I don’t really buy into the whole superstitious rigamarole. Sort of when pigs fly kind of thing which is why I’m sharing with you Flying Pig paper animation kits. [...]
I quite adore my little Ox, my one and only—–worth his weight in gold!
kristina: I’ve got to fatten Stephen up if he’s to be worth his weight in gold.
Just happen to stumble on this website trying to find out about the Golden Pig Year - its actually every 60 years - not 600!
Isabelle: Hi!! 60 sounds so much more reasonable than 600 but also less special. lolol I got it from Rice Daddies so I’ll blame them.
