Stephen’s Current Menu

Busymom’s post* about her picky eater made me feel so much better today. Over the past two weeks of Christmas vacation, Stephen and I have had more than a few tussles over him not eating something that he asked me to prepare for him. I think he actually had an upset stomach last week because he would try to eat, then let out a huge burp that was borderline gagging. He wasn’t even able to eat his McChicken Nuggets on Boxing Day (yes, we have weird Christmas traditions).
Yesterday night at a New Year’s potluck, he refused to eat anything and worried everyone else but me (mainly because my general philosophy is that if he’s hungry, he will eat). He later ended up eating three sticks of teriyaki chicken yakitori (redundant if you know Japanese), a huge scoop of tiramisu, and some french fries. Not exactly well-rounded, but in the general scheme of yesterday’s food intake, not too shabby.
Here’s what he currently likes to eat:
- Royal Gala apples and the occasional green apple
- Strawberries
- Chips
Haribo sour gummy candy- Fresh broccoli, boiled in chicken broth
- Broccoli nori noodle soup (recipe)
- Honey butter toast
- French fries
- Chicken nuggets
- Battered fish
- Rice and nori seaweed
- Chocolate
- Chicken sandwich (at school)
- Char sieu pork buns
- Chocolate and sprinkle covered Krispy Kreme donuts
- Chocolate brioche
- Chocolate croissant (hmmm, sensing a Marv influence here)
- Tiramisu
Not a huge list, but the variety isn’t too limited either. Protein, veggies, and fruit are all represented. And the junk is limited to a set amount per day so he knows not to ask for more and doesn’t get the chance to go overboard.
Tomorrow, we’re headed to Chinatown where I hope he will gobble up his usual three or four char sieu bao and me chicken feet, turnip cakes, and other yummies. I’m hungry just thinking about it but still have to sleep before tomorrow comes.
*For the record, pickled squid sounds yummy.

If your comment doesn't show up immediately, it's probably in moderation. I will approve it as soon as I can! Thanks for your patience.

Hi Doc!
Thanks for dropping by. And your kind comments.
The list looks okay to me, well, as long as the kid is eating…. I’m not too worried. There will come a time when he can’t stop eating, like my teen son now. sigh….
Have a great 2007!!!
Hey, that it totally not fair! Your kid is eating more kinds of things than my kid!!!
Here’s our List. I’m not including the things he will smell but not taste, because while some people may believe you can live off air, I don’t. heh.
Milk
Chocolate
gummy “fruit” snacks
medium cheddar cheese
graham crackers
cheese crackers
chicken nuggets (but only certain brands and shapes. AUGH)
hot dogs (ditto chicken comment)
ice cream
ramen noodles (beef flavor)
saltines on occasion
club crackers (yes, he’s a fan of crackers)
mozzarella cheese sticks
I’m probably forgetting something. He gets a multi vitamin/mineral supplement daily because I worry all the time about his plain refusal to consume fruits and veggies. He comes from a genetic stew of misc food allergies, as well as having mouth sensory issues, so I try not to worry too much. Sometimes he will sniff our tasty food and then lick it. Once in a while we get to test the strength of our hearts when he takes a bite of something new.
I quit fighting with him about it months ago though, because the last thing we wanted was a control issue over food.
We’ll be sitting there, eating our fruits and veggies, our tasty noodles, or yummy curry (I have even tried making it with no spicy spice, but he won’t taste it), or any number of things, and he will chat about all of it and still not bite it. *sigh*
The picky eating? I blame my husband. LOL.
Parenting. such a challenge sometimes!!!
Ugh. chicken feet? Really? Isn’t that like sucking on bones? How much *is* there to eat off of a chicken foot?
eastcoastlife: You are so funny with calling me “Doc.” Please call me Hsien!
Deb: Oooh, yes. I blame Marv for the picky eating too. The only thing good out of it is that they’re both thin. Maybe I should try to be more picky.
kimmellee: Chicken feet is yum!! There’s no meet just plump, sauce-laden skin. hehee I’ll try to take a picture next time.
