Beta Programs Suck
Posted by Cottontimer on 17 Jul 2006 | Tagged as: What the @#!

I just spent the last hour trying to figure out why my Firefox browser wouldn’t load Google.com or any other URL with the Google.com domain such as Gmail.Google.com. After wrangling with it for an hour, I am almost certain it was the beta version of Yahoo! Messenger with Voice (version 8.0) I installed earlier this afternoon. I couldn’t even uninstall it by going to the Windows XP control panel but had to find the uninstall exec file in the Program Files folder.
After uninstalling it, I then had to flush my DNS cache which required a lot of unnecessary finagling as well. Start –> Control Panel –> Classic View –> Admin Tools –> Services –> DNS –> Set to Manual and Start. Finally, right click on network connection and select Repair. It’s also possible to manually flush the DNS in the command line but that’s just more annoying detail.
As my mom said - “Never install anything that’s beta.” I knew that already but was excited to be able to IM with friends who are on MSN Messenger (hi Anny!). Guess I’ll just have to rely on a million open apps.
/end rambling rant

Um, I think it was probably on Google’s end. Hate to break it to ya, but I think you uninstalled the beta needlessly. Why do I think this? Because I can access various Google services via Firefox -at this very moment- all except Gmail, which it tells me is having a temporary server error. I also, at this very moment, have the newest shiniest Yahoo Messenger Beta installed. I didn’t let it install a toolbar or anything like that when I downloaded the beta version, so maybe you could reinstall it and not let it put shortcuts and toolbars all over the place. heh.
Hey woman. I swear that it’s Yahoo Messenger that caused all those troubles. I also didn’t allow it to give me a toolbar or any of that other garbage. In any case, Gmail was giving me trouble too a couple of weeks back. They all suck!!!
Oh, and I could access Google on our other laptop so the only thing that changed on my laptop was Yahoo Messenger. Lots of troubleshooting went into this proclamation - Unplug Yahoo Messenger Beta!
OK, so now I’m wondering if it’s Google acting up because I can’t access news.google.com again. GRRR.
Tales of woe and tribulation such as these serve to re-affirm my stance that I don’t want to have to fiddle with things, I just want them to work. All the time. Or at least all the times when I want to use them. Computers, cars, whatever.
I hope you can access news again soon! I’d go insane if I couldn’t check the news and my email regularly. lol
Your mom says that to you? (Instead of, “always best to have two jackets in case one is in the wash.”)
Just downloaded Firefox lasy night and enjoying the results, and comparing it to Safari.
(On my 5-key less Mac.)
I’m impressed that you’re mom is so tech savvy! How cool to be able to talk about your passion with such a caring audience! - Benson
Are you in London? I’m arriving at Rosie’s tonight. If you are e-mail her rather than me…it’ll be quicker!
Your mom sounds mucht to technical.
Deb: There’s always Yahoo! Mwahahhaa. I’m sure those Google guys wouldn’t like to hear that they lost a customer to Yahoo. hehe
Kristina: I’ll send you a 5-key if I find an extra.
Benson: My mom knows an impressive amount about computers esp. hardware! And she definitely knows enough to sympathize.
Snowy: Emailed both of you!
mdmhvonpa: I hope Stephen says the same about me someday!
[...] My internet mojo is at an all time low. First there was the Wanadoo-Orange broadband fiasco (which will hopefully come to a close at the end of the month when they promise to refund me everything I’m owed). Then, I couldn’t access Google.com for a few hours a couple of days ago and now today, I was unable to access Livejournal.com and Typepad.com in the morning and in the evening around the same time as my Google problems started, I couldn’t access any of the b5media sites. I could see other sites fine but not the ones that matter the most to me. Figures. [...]
And why don’t you use Trillian (www.ceruleanstudios.com), which lets you access ICQ, AIM, Yahoo messenger and MSN Messenger all on one application?
jenmcd: Cool! I’ll check it out.
Thank you!!
