Cancelled Wanadoo/Orange Wireless & Talk
Posted by Cottontimer on 05 Jun 2006 | Tagged as: London
After a lot more begging and pleading, Wanadoo/Orange finally agreed to let me breakup with it without a cancellation fee (will have to keep a close eye on my credit card bill to make sure this is true). They’ll also be sending a pre-paid pouch for me to return the useless Livebox router.
Now I have to wait 10 days for my phone line to clear before I can sign up with another ISP for broadband. I’m leaning towards BT because Trevor at Simplicity seems happy with them…so far. Within the next 10 days, if he starts experiencing trouble (not trying to jinx you, Trevor!) then I guess I’ll consider Virgin or AOL. If anyone reading this has other suggestions, please advise!
According to Wanadoo/Orange tech support, there’s a note on my account saying that I’m owed 68.97 GBP (more than $130 USD) for the months I did not have proper broadband service (I had signed up for a 22.99 GBP per month package). To get the refund so I have to write to (for anyone looking for this information.:
Orange Customer Care
PO Box 486
Rotherham
S63 5ZX
Meanwhile, I’m using AOL Anytime dial-up which costs me 15.99 GBP (about $30 USD) after the first free month and may have to keep it around for a few months as back-up. Getting Internet access in London is NOT cheap or easy.
One bright spot this week - our years-old grimy rental furniture is getting replaced tomorrow! Pictures after I’ve reorganized.

You know what they say: “If at first you don’t succeed; try, try again. Then quit. No sense making a damn fool of yourself.” Glad you have other options.
Argh but maybe victory of a sort.
My folks have had no problems with Pipex.
Bald Man: Not sure how good the other options are, though. *sob*
Kristina: I felt unbelievably free last night.
pieman: Hi there! Thanks for the suggestion. I have to stop reading the forums at ADSLguide. Everyone has something to bitch about for every one of the ISP’s. GAH.
Well, considering that BT was the original phone company in the UK, they *should* know what they are doing.
I am surprised that AOL is so much more expensive in the UK. I think my MIL was paying 23.95 for her dial up AOL (we finally got her to broadband DSL when it became cheaper than dialup!)
Leslie: Broadband penetration in the UK is still quite low which is why dial-up is still pricey. All the new ISP’s are trying their darndest to get people to sign up for broadband, though. Google is also expanding their offices here in anticipation.
[...] Since I cancelled my Wanadoo/Orange Wireless & Talk broadband service a week ago, I’ve finally been able to sign up for BT Option 3 wireless broadband which is to be activated on June 20th - Marv’s birthday and our wedding anniversary. What a lovely gift that would be to both of us! [...]
Dear All,
felt I needed to redress the balance,
I have recently been gifted the Livebox set up,and(touch wood!)it has been quite a pleasant experience, bought a cheap(?14ish) wireless card for my desktop, installed it myself, harangued Orange for some support, and they came through,pc connected, even got my orange SPV M3100 connected through it,no grizzles here, all I can suggest is that you good people keep a sense of humour when things don’t go according to plan, and accept that the person on the other end of the fone is:
a,not at fault,&
b,is normally trying to help you!
Forgive me if I sound patronising, this is not intentional, this is just how I approach Orange customer services,as I have done for the 11 years I have subscribed to them!
Hope this is of help to all reading my spiel!
Best regards,and Good Luck!
trophy885: Thanks for your comment. Glad you’ve had a good experience. I am now happily using BT Broadband. Hallelujah!
I just waited 10 days for my bt broadband to come, i get it and already experiencing problems….so annoying its mainly on my firewall turned on, when its not! so its during the holidays and i hoped to get connected to xbox live as well….obviously not! this is so annoying im definetly changing to bt for sure!
i thought it was going to be good, two ethernet ports helping you to be online and be on my xbox live….oh well shows you how foreigners persuade you into buying it! grrr
Daniel: Not clear what broadband provider you’re on but I hope you find a good one!
Oh, and I should add, we routinely have 3 laptops AND an XBox 360 all using broadband at the same time so BT Broadband is good for us! But there are, of course, exceptions to every case. I hope you’re not one of them.
