Musical Listening Test
Posted by Cottontimer on 15 Mar 2006 | Tagged as: Memes and Quizzes
The University of Newcastle Upon Tyne is studying musical perception ability in the general population. I took their online musical listening test this morning and scored 29 out of 30. I had hoped to get a perfect score considering I have perfect pitch, but my attention started to wander. Goes to show that having talent means nothing if you don’t do anything with it.
Take the test and tell us how you did!

I got 26/30 which amazed me as I can’t sing in tune, and I have the beginnings of age-related deafness!
So, I’m not tone-deaf, which is what I’ve always thought, but have a problem producing the sound myself.
I got 28/30. Reminds me of the aural exams I took when I was learning the piano. In the beginning I was a bit uncertain as I was also looking out for differences not only in the tune but also in terms of the expressions, e.g. length of notes, rests and slurs. So that kind of got me a bit distracted I guess.
I got 24/30. Probably would have done better if I was at home and not at work (distracted).
28. And I was definitely not paying attention - I feel quite pleased!
Just like Mummy, I can’t sing for toffee. I love singing however… And I can’t get my chinese tones AT ALL. I’d always blamed it on being tone deaf. And I scored 25/30. I’m amazed…
i got 28. i should pick up piano again…
this was an interesting quiz though!
27 out of 30. The first couple pairs took me by surprise, because I mis-read “tunes” as “tones”, and was expecting two single notes. heh. The ones nearer the end were easier, because my ear was listening for the differences more acutely. Nice to know that not practicing for 15 years hasn’t caused -all- my training to flee my brain. lol
They sent me an e-mail and I answered a few questions (amongst other things they asked if my children sang in tune and I said yes! sorry Rosie! I suppose that to every mother their child is a gazelle…) and then asked me to take the test again….I got 30/30…this cannot be about musicality! Or hearing, as I have to turn everything up to be able to hear it…oh well, thanks for drawing my attention to it.
and hey, hsien-hsien, thank you for that suggestion regarding internships! i sent out a bunch of emails to law firms in beijing inquiring for available internship positions, and one of them responded back asking for my resume! hehe, thank you for that suggestion. that was innovative. and it worked.
snowy: Your perfect quiz second time around shows you’re a good learner! And I love that you think Rosie sings in tune.
parentingjoy: I remember those piano tests too! I was awful on theory. hehe
river2sea72: What were you doing taking the exam at work?!
Lisa: It always feels good to do well on exams even if they don’t mean anything.
Rosie: Let me be the judge of your Chinese tones.
laurina: I’m planning to get a (electric) piano when we finally live in our own home in Singapore. I’ve got no muscle memory left in my fingers, though. And good luck on the job hunt!! Feel free to e-mail me anytime if you want career advice. I’m always full of it. haha
Deb: Sometimes those of us with too much training and brains make everything more complicated.
i have an electric piano in my home. what i like about it is that you can plug earphones into the piano and you can play late at night. i find it very relaxing, and romantic, to play music at night. it also saves me from the embarrassment of other people hearing my mistakes!! hahaha
and as for the fingers, my piano teacher used to make me practice every note in staccato. you might want to try that too, of course with earphones, or you might just drive everyone in your family insane! haha
Hm. I’m rather bummed that I got the worst score of everyone here
We have a Yamaha Clavinova and I loooooooove it. It’s great with Sadie too because she can bang on it all she wants and it never goes out of tune
Same score as you!
river2sea72: You are more competitive than I thought!
Just kidding!
Wini: Hope you aren’t disappointed!
