Still Alive in London

I’m alive but without a life since I still don’t have internet access at home! My broadband equipment arrived yesterday but my phone line hasn’t been activated. Let’s hope that we’ll be good to go by the end of the week. Heard that one before….
The big news this week is the start of nursery school for Stephen. Given his shaky start last September, I was bracing myself for the worst. But, the boy is growing up and jumped right in; right into the sand table I should say because that is definitely his favorite piece of play equipment. Can’t say that he is loving school but he goes with little complaint and seems to muddle through somehow.
I, on the other hand, am muddling through hours of housework every day. Going from having to do little to no housework to maintaining a four-story house is a huge struggle. It’s clear that my online time will be limited from now on. That’s probably a good thing.
My Cleaning Schedule
- Sunday - Bedsheets
- Monday - Clean kitchen and laundry room and vacuum living/dining rooms
- Tuesday - Ironing (takes at least two hours)
- Wednesday - Catching up
- Thursday - Vacuuming (the stairs are the death of me)
- Friday - Bathrooms (four, gah)
- Saturday - Towels
Laundry every single day and I’m still unpacking.
I know this is a return to normal life and a privileged one too. But I still have to say that I HATE HOUSEWORK!!! It does seem to be getting easier as I figure out an efficient routine but it doesn’t get any more fun.
Now I know why my neighbor has both a nanny and a housekeeper.

hi.. can understand what you are going through… we were “maidless” for a week and i was also running mad with Ian and the housework… glad that stephen is adapting well in school…big boy already!!!
4 stories must feel like a castle. I don’t envy you the hosuework. I can barely get time to unload the dishwasher.
4 stories! *pant* I hate housework too and am very glad to have a part-timer. Can you get someone to come in once or twice a week to help clean?
woah! 4 storeys! must be really huge too. cant wait to see all your beautiful pictures!!
the housework must be seriously a big pain in the ass! i was already complaining like mad when i had to clean up one small pathetic hostel room!
Erm, if my hubby moved me to a 4-story house with no housekeeper AND no internet, that would be grounds for divorce.
lol… my mom wondered (when we moved to Italy) how this (what you explained) was considered a privileged life? She was the “queen” in the house, having a maid help full time and when she moved she became the “maid”! hehehe… hence we never moved to 4-storey houses!
Oh my goodness. Can’t you find a cleaner?
You wash sheets every week? I wash ours every other week and it feels like enough to me. I suppose I have lower standards.
SIAO LIAO! 4 storeys?! can you please find a cleaner, at least on a part-time basis? or is that in the works?
i miss your posts!
Just think, with all those stairs, you’ll be in great shape in no time at all! hehehe. The first week in our house, my legs and back were killing me because we had no stairs in our other house, and in this house the laundry is in the basement.
I don’t envy you having 4 stories to clean though. ugh.
Yes, sheets can be done every 2wk, same for surfaces/floors if it really gets to you. You should get a part-time help–go ahead, it’s justified. Doing housework as a profession or doing your own-housewk are totally different things …
Kitchen tops should be wiped down after the last meal every day to avoid stubborn oil stains building up, which will be much more difficult to remove later on. Soak cooking/eating utensils after every use, with a drop of detergent, to make it easier to wash later.
btw, i strongly recommend a housekeeping-tome, which i ordered over amazon, called ‘Home Comforts’. Provides practical, realistic housekeeping rationale & solutions to everything imaginable… Written by a lawyer, no less..
it seems smart that you’re breaking it up into days and tasks.
ps i love that “home comforts” book, too. it’s really helped me.
