Our playdates have dried up. For a few months, we were on a roll going to the park, the bowling alley, and friends’ homes almost every day of the week. With the heat and rain of rainy season, we’ve preferred to stay home instead.

I know I’ve gotten busier and not so interested in wasting my time chit chatting with the other moms while our kids play together. But everyone also seems too busy to get together; we were away for a few days, other people had relatives to entertain for a while, and another person is out of the country. Stephen doesn’t seem to mind so I haven’t really worried about it much.

Today, I had an idea. My helper’s eight-year-old daughter has vacation right now and only has summer school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Since Stephen hasn’t been taking his afternoon naps consistently, I invited her over to play.

I don’t know about H, but Stephen had a wonderful time. One of the games they invented involved making a hoop out Legos then rolling superballs down the slide to see if they could get the balls through the hoop and into a basket propped up on the other side. When my helper tried to join in the fun, Stephen shooed her away.

So I’ve given H her first job. She’ll be given a little spending money if she comes to play with Stephen for a couple of hours once a week. It should be a win-win situation all around.
