One Size Doesn’t Fit All

Bigger and better seems to be the mantra of modern life. Everyone is enamored of a bigger salary, bigger house, bigger TV, bigger diamond,…the list goes on.
I’ve fallen into this bigger trap many times.
For example, some of my clothes are way too big and baggy. Aside from being very unflattering, it’s actually uncomfortable having a loose neckline and baggy butt. Oversize shoes are dangerous, of course. And big bags end up being dumping grounds for all and sundry.
When Stephen was born, I collected several different types of baby slings. One of them, the Girasol wraparound baby carrier, is a tie sling that is one long piece of fabric which you knot in different ways. Comfortable for both the babywearer and baby, the Girasol is available in three different lengths and the right one depends on your weight and height. Peppermint offered me the longest one when my size was not available. Stupidly, I thought that bigger must be better and took it. What a mistake. The extra fabric makes it very difficult to wrap and tie and it’s darn hot to use.
Same story with bath towels. For the longest time, we used towels from our college days (we just celebrated our 10th reunion). Finally, I got some fluffy towels on sale that stretched from my chin to my ankles. I thought they’d be luxurious. Quite the opposite. They turned out to be so big that they were unwieldy to use. And they were so heavy that it took a long time to dry them after washing.
Living large isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
