Violent Nursery Rhymes

Comments to an earlier post about the depressing nature of the lullaby I made up for Stephen inspired me to look up other disturbing nursery rhymes in addition to Rock-a-Bye Baby and Ring Around the Rosy mentioned by and .
Tell tale tit,
Your tongue shall be slit:
And all the dogs in town
Shall have a little bit.
As I Was Going To Sell My Eggs
As I was going to sell my eggs
I met a man with bandy legs,
Bandy legs and crooked toes;
I tripped up his heels
And he fell on his nose.
There Was An Old Woman
Who Lived In A Shoe
There was an old woman
Who lived in a shoe,
She had so many children
She didn’t know what to do;
She gave them some broth
Without any bread
And whipped them all soundly
And sent them to bed.
And in case you were wondering, Dr. Adam Fox says, “You would hear about 10 times more violence if you listened to an hour of nursery rhymes than if you watched television for an hour before 9 o’clock on an average day.” He also says that there are more disturbing scenes and higher levels of accidental and aggressive violence in nursery rhymes.
